"All [are] obsessed with death? And do you know why? Because we have eyes in our bodies, but none in our minds. We cannot conceive of a life other than this one -- of a life after death. We can visualize only a continuation of what we know. We have no real belief in a God."Which got me to thinking that, even in 1944 when this was written, post-modernism had begun to infiltrate our occidental minds and Miss Christie observed it. Which just brings back to one of my pet peeves in relation to all the fuss about post-modernism, as I expressed it earlier this month:
I find myself cynical when I read about or hear references to "our postmodern generation." It seems to me that this is simply a new philosophical rationalisation of the old self-centered egoism of the past generations. In trying to avoid absolutes (Truth, creation, God) we are simply, once more, redefining reality with ourselves at the centre, as being the only judges of what is and is not permitted, is and is not right or wrong.Until we turn away from ourselves and towards Someone who is infinitely more than we are, we are doomed to keep coming back to the same thing and giving it a new name to convince ourselves that we are not like past generations, we are much more knowledgeable and enlightened. Where are you going and, how are you going to get there?
